Russian Ambassador Bids Emotional Farewell to Nepal After Six Years of Diplomatic Service

Kathmandu : The Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Nepal has concluded his six-year tenure, marking the end of a diplomatic chapter defined by deepening bilateral ties, cultural exchange, and heartfelt connection with the people of Nepal. In a moving farewell statement, the outgoing Ambassador reflected on more than a decade spent in the Himalayan nation, describing Nepal not merely as a diplomatic post but as a “second home filled with memories, friendships, and profound respect for its people and traditions.”

The Ambassador praised Nepal’s unique harmony between nature and spirituality, its people’s resilience, and the country’s principled stance on international affairs. “Few places in the world combine such serenity with such strength,” he noted, highlighting the dignity and warmth he encountered during his years of service. Strengthening Russia-Nepal Ties During his tenure, the Ambassador oversaw what he described as the “steady and confident evolution” of Russia–Nepal relations. He emphasized the broadening scope of bilateral cooperation, extending beyond traditional diplomacy into fields such as education, science, culture, energy, humanitarian exchange, and notably, interregional partnerships. Initiatives like sister-city arrangements between Russian and Nepali municipalities were cited as key achievements.

“These partnerships now bring together local administrations, universities, and cultural institutions, allowing our citizens to communicate directly and learn from one another,” he said. A Focus on Education and People-to-People Ties Particularly close to the Ambassador’s heart was the expansion of educational exchanges. Russian universities have become an increasingly popular destination for Nepali students, with hundreds enrolling each year in fields such as medicine, engineering, and linguistics. “They return home not only with academic knowledge but also with firsthand experience of Russian culture and values — becoming genuine ambassadors of friendship between our nations,” he remarked. Cultural diplomacy was another cornerstone of his mission.

Through events hosted by the Russian House in Kathmandu — including film festivals, language contests, concerts, and exhibitions — the Embassy sought to make Russian culture accessible and relatable to the Nepali public. Diplomatic Alignment and Shared Principles The Ambassador also commended Nepal’s neutral and independent foreign policy, noting the country’s consistent support for key Russian-backed resolutions at the United Nations. These include measures against the glorification of Nazism and the eradication of colonialism.

“Nepal’s balanced and consistent approach earns sincere respect in Moscow and beyond,” he said, calling the country “a powerful example” of how neutrality and global engagement can coexist. He reiterated that both Russia and Nepal share a vision for a multipolar world, regional peace, and a rejection of neocolonialism and ideological dominance. A Personal Goodbye — But Not a Final One As he prepares to depart, the Ambassador expressed deep appreciation to Nepali officials, institutions, fellow diplomats, the Russian community, and countless individuals who have shaped his journey.

He praised his Embassy team for their professionalism and dedication. “What I will miss most is simple: the people,” he said, referencing not just colleagues and officials but ordinary citizens who welcomed him into their lives. With visible emotion, the Ambassador concluded his farewell by emphasizing that his connection to Nepal is not ending. “I do not say goodbye. I prefer to say, ‘See you again.’ Because I will return — perhaps not as an Ambassador, but always as a friend.”
